Discover the key insights and developments from the 9th National Brain Injury Conference in Adelaide, where BIAT explored the latest research, networked with experts, and showcased innovative projects like the National Assistance Card and Employ Me.

The team from the Brain Injury Association of Tasmania (BIAT) recently attended the 9th National Brain Injury Conference in Adelaide.

This significant event brought together professionals, researchers, and individuals impacted by brain injury from across Australia and the world, providing a critical platform to share the latest research, insights, and best practices in the field of brain injury.

For BIAT staff, the conference offered a unique opportunity for professional development, networking, and team-building. Staff members attended a wide range of lectures, workshops, and panel discussions tailored to the programs they work on at BIAT.

A prominent theme at this year’s conference was domestic and family violence, particularly its connection to brain injury. Dr. Eve Valera, a leading researcher from the United States, conducted a workshop on intimate partner violence and brain injury, exploring how services can better identify and support individuals who have sustained brain injuries as a result of violence.

BIAT staff expressed that their participation in the conference significantly deepened their understanding of brain injury, enhancing their confidence and capacity to provide support. This learning has had a direct impact on how they will approach their work moving forward.

For many, the opportunity to engage with leading experts and hear the lived experiences of those affected by brain injury was both educational and inspiring.

Marie-Clare, Executive Officer of BIAT, highlighted the dual benefits of the conference. “It was a fantastic opportunity to showcase what BIAT has been doing with projects like the National Assistance Card and the Employ Me project, while also engaging with the latest national and international research."

"This will help us look ahead to future developments, particularly in areas like family violence, where we’re already working on new proposals," she continued.

The conference also provided a valuable platform for BIAT to demonstrate its leadership within the sector. “We always hear at these conferences that Tasmania and BIAT punch well above our weight,” Marie-Clare added, reflecting on BIAT’s ability to achieve significant outcomes despite its smaller size.

“Representing Tasmania and what we’re achieving here is something we’re very proud of.”

Team-building and networking were additional highlights for the BIAT staff. Many valued the chance to connect with other professionals, share experiences, and explore opportunities for future collaboration. BIAT team members, spoke about the motivation that came from meeting people with brain injury and the organisations working to support them. “It’s given us a boost of confidence and enthusiasm for the work we do,” they have said.

In addition to presenting their own work, BIAT staff were also able to gather new insights from the broader brain injury sector, with the team now back in Tasmania with a renewed sense of energy and a clearer vision of how their work fits into both the national and international landscape.

The knowledge and connections gained at the conference will continue to shape BIAT’s work as it strives to improve the lives of those affected by brain injury.
